The government or organizations do not have records on how many persons are suffering from Muscular Dystrophy (MD). It is estimated that there may be more than 25-30,000 (approx.) with various types of MDs based on the current population growth of the country, 1.9% per annum. The numbers of MDs disabled are supposed to be increased accordingly and there is limited scope for easy access on diagnosis, counseling and needy treatment.

However, although the Government has accommodated the MDs within the Disability Classification, the parents are not aware about the services and benefits provided by the Government as such they are in need of peer counseling services.

MDF-NEPAL is formulated in initiation of Parents of Muscular Dystrophy family and Social workers of Nepal. Considering the multiethnic composition of Nepali population, the incidence of Muscular Dystrophy (MD) Disorders is similar to the rest of the world.

MDF-NEPAL�s programs are initially funded entirely by founders, individuals / private contributors of the country. It is purely self-help organization of the country.



Rationale Of Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) In Nepal

In Nepal, there is not any research, official data, health policy or legal framework regarding the cure and rehabilitation on MD. So, It became crucial to establish a national level organization to maintain links with global research organization, parent organizations, and associations to get latest information on research and rehabilitation management for MD. From this point of view MDF-NEPAL is dedicated to dissemination of information about the disease and the way to comfort both the patients and their family to prolong the life span of the patients as far as it is possible.

Establishment of MDF-Nepal

The MDF-NEPAL is a Non- Profit making voluntary organization registered in Government of Nepal, District Administrative office, Lalitpur on 2003. MDF-NEPAL is formulated in initiation of Parents Projects Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD-Nepal) and Social workers. This foundation is dedicated for the services of the patients with MD for rehabilitation approach and creating social value. MDF-Nepal�s national head office is in Kopundole, Lalitpur, Nepal.
